San Francisco Flower Mart
I’ve lived in San Francisco for 20 years, and last week was my first foray into the San Francisco Flower Mart. I had no idea what I was missing. I spent all of my high school years working at Avenue Flower Shop in Lompoc – every Saturday and all summer long. There is nothing like the smell of a florist, and it knocks you off your feet when you enter the many buildings in the San Francisco Flower Mart. I ended up parking here for a Giants day game. At 6th and Brannan, $20 is the cheapest you’ll find to park within the five blocks of AT&T Park (shh – keep this between us).
There’s nothing related to floral that you won’t find here – flowers, plants, vases, containers, ribbon, floral clay, frogs (these are the pieces put at the bottom of a vase to hold the flowers in place), flowers, flowers, orchids, decorative additions, flowers, and the list goes on. Some shops specialize in one particular thing, like orchids and green plants. Others attempt to provide the gamut, like the supply shops.
The shops at San Francisco Flower Mart are open REALLY early and stay open, generally, until about 3pm. Mr. Cox, the owner of Avenue Flower Shop, used to drive from Lompoc to shop at the San Francisco Flower Mart. He was always one of the shop owners there first thing in the morning in order to make the trip back home to Lompoc, about 300 miles. The people I met and talked with were very accommodating. They’ll work with shop owners and us public folk alike. There’s a little cafe on the corner of 6th and Brannan, the Flower Market Cafe, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I intend to check it out on my next trip to the San Francisco Flower Mart which will be a lot sooner than 20 years!!
