Sidewalk Foodie Tour – North Beach

Sidewalk Foodie Tour – North Beach

After being on the Sidewalk Food Tour, boasting San Francisco’s Valencia Corridor restaurants, with friends in town, we decided to take advantage of the other foodie tour in North Beach, San Francisco’s famed Italian district.

We met at Cafe Trieste where we received a briefing on our three hours of foodie-ism.  Kasey was our tour guide.  Cafe Trieste is a very old espresso place.  Kasey says it was the first in the country.  It’s a locals hangout, and I know why they go – the coffee is amazing!!

We headed down the street to Molinari, open since 1896.  They have the most complete selection of Italian products around.  They make fresh mozzarella every day.  Their coldcuts are amazing.  We enjoyed pieces of a sopresatta with the fresh mozzarella and roasted bell peppers.  Dave loves sandwiches and managed to grab two extra pieces.  He was in heaven.

My friends at Swan Oyster Depot have been telling me that US Restaurant is the best Italian restaurant in the city.  They should know from their generations long Italian North Beach living.  This was my first visit, but definitely not my last!!  They served us fried chickpea chips and samples of delicious meatballs.  They have a very complete menu of Italian food at very reasonable prices. Can’t wait to go back.  Although they don’t have a website, you’ll see lots of online reviews recommending their meatballs and poo-poo’ing the long waits in the evening.  My suggestion is – go for lunch!!

Tony, of Tony’s Pizza Napolitana, has won the Naples World Cup for his amazing pizza.  He has several different ovens used to produce a variety of different pizza styles, a true artisan.  The New York Cheese was really good, but I like pizzas with more ‘stuff’.  I’ll be back to try my own personal favorite.

Our final stop was XOX Truffles, where Jean Marc showed how he makes 40-50 pounds of artisan truffles every day.  They are very reasonably priced, and available online.  He made for us the lemon dark chocolate, and then we were able to pick three others to try.  He had to have at least 25 flavors to choose from, mostly dark chocolate, but milk and white chocolate are also available.  What a wonderful day.  Thank you, Kasey!!
