Bette’s Oceanview Diner

Bette’s Oceanview Diner

I first heard about Bette’s Oceanview Diner from Check Please Bay Area.  If you haven’t watched this KQED PBS show, you’re missing some great reviews of bay area restaurants.  The show is a half hour, and three guests pick three restaurants, and they each go and check them out.   I would love to be on this show.

We were headed out to the Sierra Foothills for the weekend, so we decided to stop in Berkeley and give Bette’s Oceanview Diner a try.  Bette’s has a number of excellent reviews, getting 4 out of five stars on Yelp, UrbanSpoon and others.  Pretty much every review says to get there early.  There are no reservations, and the line gets long after 10am.  We were there at 9 and got seats at the counter, the perfect spot to watch the chefs do their magic.

The menu at Bette’s Oceanview Diner is simple and thorough.  You can expect all of the usual breakfast fare.  There’s some Mexican additions to give more variety, and the Souffle Pancake looks amazing.  The lunch menu is also typical of a diner.  The interior is classic diner with counter seats and banquettes.  There’s even old fashioned jukeboxes at the counter seating area.

We chose the Mexican Scramble and Huevos Rancheros, mainly for the beans vs. potatoes.  Bette’s Oceanview Diner prepares their scrambles and omelets in the French fashion which means only lightly scrambled and very fluffy.  The eggs were made with cheese and salsa, and accompanied by smoky black beans, crunchy chorizo patties and a flour tortilla.  I find the flour tortilla unusual for this kind of breakfast.  Normally Mexican breakfasts are served with corn tortillas.  Regardless, the scramble was delicious.  The Huevos Rancheros were also quite good, with cheese and salsa on top of sunny side up eggs, on top of a flour tortilla and beans and cilantro on the side.  Prices are in range for a bay area diner.

Right next door to Bette’s Oceanview Diner is Bette’s To Go.  They have a myriad of products to purchase, and food to go.  The location is perfect for a shopping day on Fourth Street in Berkeley.
