Having watched Hubert Keller’s PBS cooking show, I knew that his Burger Bar was pretty darn cool, and I even bought the cookbook. He has everything from Kobe Beef burgers to a yummy-looking black bean burger. Still, I never really thought about going to his place on the 6th floor of Macy’s Union Square – most likely because such decadent food is not supposed to be on the diet. Yesterday, however, after shopping for a dress to wear to a wedding in England, there Dave and I were with just enough time to grab a bite to eat before heading to a party.
Burger Bar’s menu is fabulous, but the view is even more extraordinary. We felt kind of guilty being locals and getting a seat right at the window, but that didn’t last long. Pretty much every table in the bar area has a great view. (I was thoroughly impressed with myself snagging this picture of their sculpture against the beautiful Union Square backdrop!)
Our waitperson was at our table immediately, asking us for our cocktail order, and she took some time to tell us about the menu. There are pre-set menu items, but the really cool part was the building of your own burger, however you want it. The choices are set up by category, i.e. Dairy, Veggie, etc. Dave chose the Kobe Beef burger, and I chose the grass-raised beef from Oregon. We both topped our burgers with bacon, egg and cheese – breakfast AND lunch on a bun. It was delicious, perfectly cooked, and extremely satisfying.
