Peter Luger Steak House

Peter Luger Steak House is easy to write about as we always have the same thing.  I think Peter Luger is one of the best steakhouses in the country.

The subway to Brooklyn’s first stop over the Williamsburg Bridge is where you’ll find Peter Luger Steak House.  Be sure to make a reservation – the only do it the old-style way – over the phone, and be sure to bring cash.  It’s the only way to pay unless you’re an old timer, and Peter Luger’s bestows you with their own credit card, a feat I only know one person has accomplished.

Luger BreadThe basket of bread is nothing but delicious and trouble, as there’s lots of food ahead of you.  Although I don’t like blue cheese, I do love the wedge salad WITH blue cheese and bacon crumbles, and tomato, a classic steakhouse offering, and Peter Luger’s puts out a great one.

Steak is ordered by the person.  A 2-person steak is $100 and well worth it.  They are served the same no matter how many people are served – on a hot metal tray, sliced nicely on both sides of the Porterhouse bone, and the waiter spoons the melted, still hot butter over the steak one final time.  It’s tender and tasty.  It’s like no steak I’ve had anywhere else – so tender and huge flavor.  The Peter Luger fries are delightful and perfectly prepared for the larger size that they are.

We decided we weren’t going to dive in to Peter Luger Steak House’s amazing pecan pie with schlog, Peter Luger Steak House’s version of thick whipped cream, but after such a huge meal, we wanted to have a little something sweet.  Sure glad we did – there’s nothing like it.  Well, actually there is.  Wolfgang’s Steakhouses are all over the country, owned by Wolfgang, who was a long-time waiter at Peter Luger’s.  In fact, we’re told that he took about half the Peter Luger Steak House crew with him to his two Manhattan restaurants.  There’s one in Honolulu that we frequent.  It’s amazing that Peter Luger’s has allowed Wolfie to copy virtually everything about Peter Luger’s, down to the schlog and even the steak sauce and the way it’s served!!Luger Pie

There are several rooms at Peter Luger Steak House, all of them comfortable yet simple.  The service is excellent, and our waiter was exceptional.  He didn’t even flinch when we went to the non-Cabernet Sauvignon side of the wine list for an outstanding 2007 Chateau Neuf du Pape, the best value on the list.

Oh, and be sure to shop at Brooklyn Industries across the street – some really cool stuff there.
