Weekly Hot Tips – March 17
The start of something new. While I’m reviewing as fast as I can, I can’t possibly eat at every lead I research. So, I’ve decided to put together a weekly post under ‘Must Try’ which will summarize the hot news and tips I read throughout the week aptly named: Weekly Hot Tips – March 17. I have added a link to my review of the restaurants I’ve visited. Rest assured, the ones I haven’t are on the hit list for sure. I’ll start with restaurants, then food and wine, and finally a section under activities. Happy reading!!
San Francisco Restaurants
Dirty Habit – We have all been anticipating the remodel of Fifth Floor, one of the first super innovative restaurants that I went to 20 years ago when we moved to San Francisco. For all its wonderfulness, it really needed to catch up with the times. Same chef, but different service, and different clientele. SOMA is a hot zone for high tech workers. Paolo Lucchetti points out in his InsideScoop that the fifth floor venue and bar space will make it feel like a getaway from the every day below.
Kitty-corner and across the street from the San Francisco Moscone Convention Center, it has one of the best possible locations in the city, attracting the local works and the convention goers. Moscone Center is smaller than the big boy venues, like New Orleans and Las Vegas, so they tend to attract a smaller yet more affluent crowd, like orthopedic surgeons and investment bankers.
Local’s Corner – Locals are in for a treat Sunday evenings for the foreseeable future. Michael Black, chef/owner of the wildly acclaimed Sebo that closed last year, is doing izakaya with Local’s Corner chef, Timothy Malloy. The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Ichi Sushi Ni Bar – This recently moved San Francisco restaurant in the Mission District has gotten more press than just about any other restaurant since it opened a few weeks back. Ichi Sushi Ni Bar is listed in Zagat’s 10 Hottest New San Francisco restaurants below. Tasting Table brags about Izakaya at Ichi Sushi.
Bar Agricole and Trou Normand – Thad Vogler, owner of Bar Agricole, is busy opening up his new restaurant, Trou Normand, on Monday, 3/17. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Bar Agricole’s new chef/partner, Michelle Reitz.
Manhattan cocktails on the cheap – Manhattans are my go-to drink to determine the ability of a bartender. Apparently, Mr. Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle feels the same and found these spots for a reasonably priced Manhattan.
The EaterSF Heat Map – These guys put out this awesome heat map about once a month of the hottest 38 spots you need to try now.
Zagat’s 10 Hottest New Restaurants – Even Zagat gets into the mix with their selections on what’s new in the bay area food scene.
Food and Wine
Locals Cellar – The Locals guys are at it again. Jake DesVoignes and Yaron Milgrom, owners of Local Mission Eatery and Local’s Corner as well as Local Mission Market, have opened Locals Cellar at Florida and 22nd, a shop offering only California wine, spirits and beer. I love these guys!! Local Mission Market recently announced local delivery. The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Planning a BBQ outing? I love how Thrillist manages to come up with new and inventive lists of all things great San Francisco! Not only restaurants, but check out this BBQ list of places to grill in San Francisco. They left out Heron Head, but you can see that gallery by clicking here.
Hiking the Berkeley Hills – Weekend Sherpa does a great job covering great short and long hikes, easy and difficult. This week’s version highlights both the Berkeley Hills and the Petaluma hills.
